I would have to change the name of the blog...

Lately I've been talking to some very financially savvy friends and reading a bit about why it's advantageous to rent rather than own your home. Here's an insightful and funny post about the issue that I stumbled across. I haven't completely changed my mind, but it has given me some things to think about. And made me think "crap, what else could I call my blog??" if I change my mind.

Any other committed renters out there want to chime in? Or any owners want to remind me of the benefits of ownership?

  1. A happy renter here! :-) People keep urging us to buy, saying we are "throwing" away money in rent, but seeing the housing market crumble has scared us. Also I like that I don't have to mow lawns or shovel the path. The maintenance folks help fix anything that goes wrong. Free pool, tennis courts and fitness center. :-) Have I convinced you to change the name of the blog?

  2. The only thing is when you're old and retired... isn't property tax cheaper than rent?

"Jessica is awesome" would be a good name for this blog. Or "Jeccisa is aweasome" which is how I originally typed that. I got too much sleep last night or something.

  3. I am a happy renter and will continue to rent until I feel the time is right for me to buy a house. I will not be rushed into it by friends, family, age, co-workers...society. When the time comes I will be ready.

  4. Don't change the name! Just be you. And if that means renting and not buying until after you are 30... oh well!

  6. I would like to say that from the perspective of a busy creative professional with future travel and possible relocation on my mind I am currently far more at ease with renting. I am certainly not a nomad but I do find myself feeling far "lighter" without a property that must be maintained and then sold once I have decided to move on. On the other hand I would imagine it would feel nice to know you own your property and have far more creative freedom with it. That said I would consider owning in the future, and to echo what Broke said earlier "When the time comes..." BTW: I have been here for only a few minutes and I am struck by how honest, simple, and involved you are with this blog. Thanks.
